Old Testament

Psalms 9

I will praise you, LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell about all your wonderful deeds.

I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, Most High.

When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before you.

Because you have upheld my cause; you sat on your throne judging with fairness.

You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have erased their name forever and ever.

The enemy has come to an everlasting end; you have destroyed their cities, and even the memory of them has perished.

But the LORD reigns forever; the LORD has set up the LORD's throne for judgment.

The LORD will judge the world in righteousness; the LORD will govern the nations with fairness.

The LORD will also be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

Those who know your name will trust in you, because you, LORD, have not abandoned those who seek you.

Sing praises to the LORD, who lives in Zion; declare among the nations what the LORD has done.

Because the LORD, who avenges bloodshed, remembers the oppressed; the LORD does not forget the cry of the humble.

Have mercy on me, LORD; see how my enemies torment me. Lift me up from the gates of death,

So that I may declare all your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion, rejoicing in your salvation.

The nations have sunk into the pit they dug; their own feet are caught in the net they hid.

The LORD is known by the justice the LORD carries out; the wicked are trapped by the work of their own hands. (Deep reflection, pause and think.)

The wicked will return to the grave, along with all the nations who forget God.

Because the needy will not always be forgotten, and the hope of the oppressed will not perish forever.

Rise up, LORD! Do not let mere mortals win. Let the nations be judged in your presence.

Strike them with terror, LORD; let the nations know they are only mortal. Pause and think.
