Matthew 6

1Be careful not to do your good deeds in front of others just to be seen by them. If you do, you will get no reward from your Father in heaven.

2So when you give to the poor, do not announce it with trumpets, as the pretenders do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that others will praise them. I tell you the truth, they already have their full reward.

3But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

4Then your giving will be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

5And when you pray, do not be like the pretenders. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that others will see them. I tell you the truth, they already have their full reward.

6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who cannot be seen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

7When you pray, do not keep saying the same things over and over, as those who do not know God do. They think they will be heard because they use many words.

8Do not be like those who do not know God, because your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

9This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, may Your name be honored.

10May Your kingdom come. May what You want be done on earth, just as it is done in heaven.

11Give us today the food we need.

12Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

13Keep us from being tempted, and save us from the evil one. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours forever. Amen.

14If you forgive others when they sin against you, your Father in heaven will also forgive you.

15But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

16When you fast, do not look sad like the pretenders. They make their faces look gloomy so that others can see they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they already have their full reward.

17But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face,

18So that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who cannot be seen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

19Do not store up treasures for yourselves here on earth, where moths and rust destroy them, and where thieves break in and steal.

20Instead, store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21For wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22The eye is like a lamp for the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.

23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the light inside you is really darkness, how great that darkness is!

24No one can serve two masters. That person will either hate the one and love the other, or be loyal to the one and look down on the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

25So I tell you, do not worry about your life — about what you will eat or drink, or about your body and what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

26Look at the birds in the sky. They do not plant or harvest or store food in barns, yet your Father in heaven feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are?

27Can any of you add a single hour to your life by worrying?

28And why do you worry about clothes? Look at how the wild flowers grow. They do not work or make clothing.

29But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed as beautifully as one of these.

30If God dresses the grass of the field so well — grass that is here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow — will He not much more clothe you? You have so little faith!

31So do not worry, saying: What will we eat? or, What will we drink? or, What will we wear?

32The people who do not know God run after all these things. But your Father in heaven knows that you need them.

33Instead, put God's kingdom first, and do what He wants, and all these things will be given to you as well.

34So do not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
