Matthew 16

1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus. They asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.

2Jesus answered: In the evening you say, The weather will be good, because the sky is red.

3And in the morning you say, It will be stormy today, because the sky is red and cloudy. You know how to read the look of the sky, but you cannot read the signs of the times.

4Only an evil and unfaithful people look for a sign. But none will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. Then Jesus left them and went away.

5When the disciples crossed to the other side of the lake, they forgot to bring bread.

6Jesus said to them: Be careful. Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

7The disciples talked about this among themselves and said: He says this because we did not bring any bread.

8Jesus knew what they were saying, so He said: You have so little faith. Why are you talking about having no bread?

9Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many small hand-baskets you picked up?

10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many large provision hampers you picked up?

11How is it that you do not understand? I was not talking to you about bread. I told you to watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

12Then they understood that He was not telling them to watch out for the yeast used in bread, but for the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples: Who do people say the Son of Man is?

14They answered: Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah, and still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

15But what about you? Jesus asked. Who do you say I am?

16Simon Peter answered: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17Jesus replied: God has blessed you, Simon son of Jonah. No person showed this to you, but my Father in heaven did.

18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death will not defeat it.

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you do not allow on earth will not be allowed in heaven, and whatever you allow on earth will be allowed in heaven.

20Then Jesus warned His disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.

21From that time on, Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the law. He would be killed, and on the third day He would be raised to life.

22Peter took Him aside and began to correct Him. He said: Never, Lord! This will never happen to You!

23But Jesus turned and said to Peter: Get behind me, Satan! You are getting in my way. You are not thinking about the things of God, but about the things of people.

24Then Jesus said to His disciples: If anyone wants to follow me, they must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.

25For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

26What good is it for someone to gain the whole world but lose their soul? Or what can a person give to buy back their soul?

27For the Son of Man is going to come in His Father's glory with His angels, and then He will reward each person according to what he has done.

28I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.
