Genesis 2

1This is how God made heaven and earth and everything in it.

2On the seventh day God finished the work God had been doing, and God rested from God's work.

3God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on that day God rested from all the work of creating and making the world.

4This is the story about the creation of the Heavens and the earth. This is what happened when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5There were no bushes or plants yet growing in the fields on earth, because the Lord God had not caused rain to fall on the earth, and there was no one to work the ground.

6So a mist rose up from the earth and watered the whole ground.

7Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils, and the man became a living soul.

8Then the Lord God planted a garden in the East; the name of the place was called Eden. The Lord God put the man there in that garden, the man whom the Lord God had formed.

9The Lord God planted many kinds of trees in the ground. The trees were beautiful to look at, and the trees' fruit was good to eat. In the middle of the garden, the Lord God planted the tree of life and the tree of knowing what is good and what is bad.

10A river flowed from Eden and watered the garden. The river then separated and became four smaller rivers.

11The name of the first river was Pison. This river flowed around the entire country of Havilah, where there was gold.

12There was good gold in that land, and bdellium and onyx stones.

13The name of the second river was Gihon. This river flowed around the whole land of Ethiopia.

14The name of the third river was Hiddekel. This river flowed east of Assyria. The fourth river was the Euphrates.

15The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden to work the soil and take care of the garden.

16The Lord God said to the man: You may eat fruit from any tree in the garden.

17But you must not eat from the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil. If you eat fruit from that tree, on that day you will certainly die!

18Then the Lord God said, I see that it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him.

19Then the Lord God formed all the animals and the birds out of the ground. The Lord God brought them to Adam to see what Adam would name them. Whatever Adam called each living creature, that became its name.

20Adam gave names to all the cattle, to all the birds in the air, and to all the wild animals. But Adam did not find a helper who was right for Adam.

21So the Lord God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. While Adam was asleep, God took one of Adam's ribs and closed up the flesh where the rib had been.

22The Lord God used the rib from the man to build a woman. The Lord God brought the woman to the man.

23Then Adam said, Here is a person like me at last. She has bones from my bones and flesh from my flesh. She was taken out of man, so she will be called woman.

24That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. In this way two people become one.

25The man and his wife were naked, but they were not ashamed.
